In 2024–25, the Composites Knowledge Network (CKN) made major progress under the Strategic Science Fund (SSF), expanding its role as a national hub for composites knowledge and collaboration.
Key Highlights:
- Expanding Knowledge Access: The Knowledge in Practice Centre (KPC) grew to over 240 articles, adding 50+ new pages on topics like testing, automation, and inclusive innovation. The platform now reaches users in more than 150 countries, with strong engagement across Canadian provinces.
- Practical, Accessible Learning: CKN delivered 11 AIM events on applied topics such as composite repair, QA/QC, and automation—each recorded and added to the KPC. More than 800 participants from SMEs, academia, and research institutions joined live or online.
- Sector-Wide Engagement: A national bilingual industry survey gathered insights from 60+ companies, identifying workforce training and knowledge transfer as top priorities. These findings now guide upcoming KPC and AIM initiatives.
- Building National Partnerships: Through a new regional node model, CKN deepened collaboration with academic and industry partners across Canada, ensuring knowledge is developed and shared nationwide.
- Championing Inclusion: Equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) remained central, with new training content and webinars on inclusive employment and research practices.
- Financial Stewardship: CKN responsibly managed its $500K in SSF funding, while securing nearly $485K in partner contributions to enhance program delivery and extend its national impact.
CKN’s first year under the SSF demonstrated strong national impact, global reach, and growing momentum toward a more connected, skilled, and inclusive composites sector in Canada.
