Non-Crimp Fabrics (NCF): Construction and Composite Material Application
In the world of composite reinforcement broadgoods, unidirectional and woven fabrics tend to receive the most attention. However, non-crimp fabrics (or NCFs) are quietly being utilized in a wide variety of applications, from swimming pools and wind turbine blades to automotive chassis and commercial aircraft wings. It is the structure and versatility of these fabrics that allow for this wide-ranging use, while their full potential is still being realized.
This presentation will introduce how NCFs are made, key construction variables, and the pros and cons of utilizing this reinforcement architecture. Composite laminate design concepts will be discussed along with how NCFs are utilized in such manufacturing processes, such as pultrusion, RTM, and vacuum infusion.
